Societal and cultural aspects of Tourette syndrome include legal, advocacy and health insurance issues, awareness of notable individuals with Tourette syndrome , and treatment of TS in the media and popular culture. Tourette syndrome is an inherited neurological disorder with onset in childhood, characterized by the presence of motor and phonic tics. Tourette syndrome was once considered a rare and bizarre syndrome.
It is no longer considered rare, but is often undetected because of the wide range of severity, with most cases classified as mild. There is no reason to believe that persons with Tourette’s have diminished capacity in regards to understanding legal issues. A review of all cases tried in state and federal courts in the US between and civil rights, criminal, education, family, labor, and social security found that TS was implicated in only about cases, 21 of which were criminal, over 18 years.
The authors concluded that TS “rarely leads to criminal behavior, but patients with TS who have behavioral comorbidities are at risk of being involved with the legal system”. Discussions with adults who have Tourette syndrome reveal that not everyone wants treatment or a “cure”, especially if that means they may “lose” something else in the process.
Some believe that there may even be latent advantages associated with the genetic vulnerability.

With her supervisor Professor Rachel Forrester-Jones they aim to develop an intervention to improve tic-free teenagers’ attitudes towards their peers with TS. In order to achieve that, they needed to investigate what teenagers without TS thought about their peers with TS and how they believed they would behave and act around them.
Their finding, taken from 22 participants without TS, provides insight into what an effective intervention should have in order to improve school experience for those with TS. A high percentage of children and adolescents with Tourettes Syndrome report that they have experienced bullying, also social exclusion and isolation. Young people without Tourettes also report that they would be less willing and more reluctant to interact with people with Tourettes Syndrome on some occasions.
However, youth without Tourettes have never been asked what they know about the condition and why they would exclude an individual with Tourettes Syndrome from their social group. Our study looked into how tic-free adolescents view youth with Tourettes Syndrome; what they knew about the condition and their attitudes towards their peers with the Syndrome. To answer those questions 22 teenagers 17 girls and 5 boys from a comprehensive school in South East England participated in our study.

On occasion he has been known to blurt out culturally inappropriate words at school – all of which gets him into trouble.
